Creating a minimalist feel to a room.

Living in Finland exposed me to the beautiful Scandinavian style of Interiors with its clean lines, open plan, functional spaces.

Here are a few of my personal tips for creating the perfect minimalist feel in a space.

A look that can be achieved by following these steps:

  1. Declutter: Begin by decluttering and removing any unnecessary items from the space. This will help you create a clean and straightforward foundation to work with.

  2. Stick to a neutral color palette: Minimalist design is all about simplicity, so it's best to stick to a neutral color palette. Shades of white, beige, grey, and black are perfect for creating a clean and minimalist look. Saying this I try to inject some color into my designs to add some spice to a room design.

  3. Choose simple, streamlined furniture: When it comes to furniture, choose pieces with clean lines and simple shapes. Avoid furniture with ornate details, patterns, or excessive decoration. Consider furniture made of metal, glass, or wood with a natural finish.

  4. Texture: Even in a minimalist space, accessories can add interest and texture. Consider adding a rug with a subtle pattern, a woven basket for storage, or a piece of wall art made of natural materials like wood or stone.

  5. Layer lighting: Lighting can help create interest in a minimalist space. Consider adding a statement light fixture, such as a pendant light, to draw the eye and add a touch of elegance to the room. Additionally, use lighting to highlight specific areas of the room, such as a piece of artwork or a plant. Lighting can add warmth and ambiance to a minimal room.

6.Keep surfaces clutter-free: In a minimalist space, it's important to keep surfaces free of clutter. Consider using storage solutions like closed cabinets or drawers to keep items out of sight. Less is more is my motto. But you can never have enough storage. I rarely saw a room in Finland with toys all over the floor. There was always a cupboard to put things away.

7.Open space: Negative space, or the space around and between objects, is an essential aspect of minimalist design. Consider leaving areas of the room empty to create a sense of openness and simplicity.

8.Consider the flow of the space: When arranging furniture and décor. Allow for easy movement throughout the room, and avoid blocking pathways or doorways. You do not have to fill every corner of a room with stuff.

By following these steps, you can create a perfect minimalist design look that's both functional and stylish. Remember, minimalist design is all about simplicity, so focus on choosing high-quality, timeless pieces that will stand the test of time.
